Baltimore's best restaurants: A preview of a new Going Out Guide

The Going Out Guide is coming.

This fall, the Baltimore Sun will publish a guide to the Baltimore area's best restaurants and bars. In all, 100 bars and 100 restaurants will be included. Though the final lists and the rankings won't be published until later this fall, here are 80 restaurants you can depend on making their way into the guide. How, and why, these restaurants are included we won't reveal until the guide is published.

This year's list is different from last year's top 50 round-up. For starters, there are 100 restaurants, twice as many as last year. Also: Instead of ranking the restaurants top-to-bottom, we've arranged them into eight categories that reflect the way we use restaurants -- dating, entertaining, family outings  and pure food experience.

The 80 restaurants below will fall into one of eight categories on the bar guide. Twenty others will show up as my picks -- and yours.

Again, we won't be revealing the categories, the rankings, or the critic's and readers' picks until late in the fall. Something to look forward to!
