Strand of Oaks, Marah and Kopecky to kick off WTMD's First Thursdays

Strand of Oaks, the indie-rock vehicle for Indiana singer/songwriter Tim Showalter, Pennsylvania alt-country rockers Marah and Nashville six-piece Kopecky are set to perform May 7 at Canton Waterfront Park, radio station WTMD announced on Tuesday, for the season's opening First Thursdays concert. Admission is free, as usual, and the music is set to begin at 6:30 p.m.

Strand of Oaks, which released the well-liked "HEAL" in 2014, was scheduled to perform at First Thursdays last July, but the show was canceled due to poor weather conditions. Marah performed at last year's first First Thursdays concert with artists Joan Osborne and Joseph Arthur. Formerly known as the Kopecky Family Band, Kopecky returns to the First Thursdays stage after previously playing the series when it was held in Mount Vernon in 2013.

WTMD general manager Stephen Yasko said as of now there are no significant changes in store for the popular monthly concerts held between May and August. Last year, the series moved from West Mount Vernon Park to Canton due to renovations to the Washington Monument.

"We're always looking for ways to make First Thursdays a better experience for everyone who attends," Yasko said on Wednesday morning. "We're looking at minor changes, but so far, everyone has said they are happy with the event."

The station, he said, has received more interest outside of the city and state than ever before.

"We've had people calling from southern Pennsylvania and Philadelphia," Yasko said.

The tentative schedule for the May 7 show:

Kopecky – 6:30 p.m.
Marah – 7:15 p.m.
Strand of Oaks – 8:30 p.m.
