Travelers passing through Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport will soon have more options for grab-and-go food.Steak 'n' Shake by Biglari, known for its "steakburgers" and milkshakes, recently opened in the airport's main terminal food court near the Concourse C checkpoint. And Smoothie King will follow this fall in Terminal D.The eateries are among a wave of new dining options coming to BWI, including chef Mike Isabella's Kapnos Marketa, chef Bryan Voltaggio's Family Meal, a new wine bistro called Brix & Vine and several new Starbucks locations.Tisha Skinner is opening the Smoothie King, and the franchisee expects her shop to open in late October or early November."We like to fit into everyone's daily routine," Skinner said. "The airport's perfect because it's 100 percent commuters."Smoothie King has nine other franchisees in the Baltimore area who are working to develop six to seven new locations before June 2017, according to Christine Elam, the company's franchise development manager. She said the chain is looking to open more shops in nontraditional locations like airports, malls, universities and hospitals.Skinner opened her first Smoothie King near Atlanta in 2006, but that closed during the recession. She bounced back by purchasing her Columbia location in 2012, and has taken her time scouting additional shops since then. Ultimately she hopes to operate up to five stores in Greater Baltimore. She's currently eyeing potential locations in Laurel and at several malls in the area."I was very particular about growing," Skinner said. "I've been in the system a long time, I've seen franchisees come and go."
