The Maryland Food Bank has recruited more restaurants to its "Save a Seat at Your Table" campaign as the fundraiser returns for another year.
Through April 15, more than 20 restaurants will offer specials to benefit the food bank. The promotions launched Feb. 20.
Participating restaurants include: Alexander's Tavern, Cardinal Tavern, Corner Charcuterie Bar, Five and Dime Alehouse, Fork & Wrench, Gunther & Co., Joe Squared and THB Bagels & Deli. The food bank is open to other restaurants joining the campaign.
The fundraiser is an effort to support the estimated 760,000 state residents who do not have regular access to food, the Maryland Food Bank said.
The food bank first launched the "Save a Seat" campaign in November 2015. Originally, the organization set out to attract 5,000 new donors to pledge $1 per day — the amount it takes for the food bank feed one person for a day — or about $1.8 million a year through the campaign.
The Maryland Food Bank restructured the fundraiser last spring, when it began partnering with restaurants to raise money. Last year, the organization raised about $7,000 through six partner restaurants, according to Joanna Warner, a spokeswoman for the Maryland Food Bank.
Although most of the participating restaurants are in the Baltimore area this year, some Eastern Shore restaurants are participating, too.
The specials the restaurants are offering throughout the two-month drive vary. For example, a portion of sangria sales at Alexander's Tavern will go to the campaign. At Cardinal Tavern, 20 percent of sales from each Indonesian fried chicken and doughnuts dish will go to the food bank. And at Five and Dime Alehouse, during every Wednesday trivia night, $2 from each Maryland Food Bank specialty cocktail and 5 percent of all sales from the trivia crowd will benefit the food bank.
