National Oyster Day specials around Baltimore

Oysters are a Maryland specialty, but what happens to the shells when you're done eating them?

Aug. 5 is National Oyster Day and Baltimore's oyster bars and restaurants are observing the holiday with oyster specials.

Below are some local spots offering deals on Friday to celebrate the beloved bivalve.

The Local Oyster at the Mount Vernon Marketplace will offer $1 Skinny Dipper oysters throughout the day, as well as Padded Oyster Sammies.

Loch Bar in Harbor East will have $2 local oysters from 3 p.m.-6 p.m. today. Also for $2, the restaurant will serve two types of oyster shooters — one with Natty Boh and one with vodka.

All three Ryleigh's Oyster locations in Federal Hill, Hunt Valley and Mount Vernon will offer free oysters from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. The restaurants will also offer a pint of Flying Dog Raging Bitch IPA with six Chesapeake Bay oysters for $16. Guests can keep the pint glass.

Mt. Washington Tavern from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. will offer National Oyster Day specials to benefit the Oyster Recovery Partnership. The menu includes oyster shooters, grilled and raw oysters, and beer and oyster flights.

Rusty Scupper in the Inner Harbor is donating 25 cents for every oyster sold through Sunday to the Oyster Recovery Partnership.
