Paulie Gee's Hampden, a hotly anticipated franchise of a Brooklyn, N.Y., pizzeria, has finally opened its doors in Baltimore.
The restaurant at 3535 Chestnut Ave., opened softly in late June, serving up Neapolitan-style pies.
Paulie Gee's coming to Baltimore was first announced in 2012, with an expected opening in 2013. But issues including a lack of parking at the restaurant delayed the arrival.
The restaurant serves wood-fired pizza with flavors like Stinger Bell (house-smoked mozzarella, lemon slices, olive oil, basil, lemon juice, shaved Parmigiano Reggiano and Mike's Hot Honey); Cherry Jones (fresh mozzarella, Gorgonzola, prosciutto di Parma, dried Bing cherries and orange blossom honey) and Barry White (fresh mozzarella, garlic-infused olive oil, grated Parmigiano Reggiano, black pepper and Aleppo chili oil). Prices range from $13 to $18 per pie.
The original Paulie Gee's in Brooklyn is owned by Paul Giannone, and the Hampden location, owned by Kelly Beckham, is its second outpost. Beckham could not immediately be reached for comment.
Located on the first floor of the former Hampden Republican Club building, Paulie Gee's has opened in the neighborhood as a number of restaurants are turning over. Five and Dime Alehouse is set to join Hampden's hospitality scene in September. But Alchemy recently closed after six years on the Avenue.
Paulie Gee's is open from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturdays and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays. The restaurant is closed on Mondays.
Correction: A previous version of this article misstated the type of pizza Paulie Gee's offers, and the order in which its franchises opened. The restaurant serves Neapolitan-style pizza, not New York-style pizza. The Hampden location is Paulie Gee's second outside New York, not the first. The Sun regrets the errors.
