Johns Hopkins students oppose 'hypothetical' Chick-fil-A

The Student Government Association of Johns Hopkins University has voted against having a Chick-fil-A on its campus. Not that anyone's planning to put one there.

The resolution, which was passed on Tuesday by a vote of 18-to-8, voiced the SGA's non-support of a "Chick-fil-A in a current or future sense, particularly in any location that is central to student life."

News of the resolution gained some circulation in the media after a story about it ran Wednesday on the conservative website The College Fix.

On Wednesday, the SGA posted a clarifying response on its Facebook page, explaining how the resolution came about.

"On March 31st, members of [The Diverse Sexuality And Gender Alliance] attended the SGA General Body meeting to express their discomfort with the proposition of a Chick-fil-A on Hopkins campus, given its history of discrimination toward the LGBTQ community," the post said. "[T]he resolution ... does not, in any way, ban Chick-fil-A from our campus but rather expresses the SGA's opinion on future developments."

There was no indication that anyone was seeking to put a Chick-fil-A on the Hopkins Homewood campus, but, according to reporting by Tessa Wiseman and Abby Biesman in the Johns Hopkins Newsletter, the specter of a Chick-fil-A at Homewood surfaced when some students posted their desire to have one in a response to a campus survey.

Speaking in oppostion to the proposal, the Newsletter reported, junior Andrew Guermsey urged the SGA to vote against the proposal, asking it to "do nothing about a hypothetical Chick-fil-A."
