Jerry Pellegrino is opening a cooking school in Mount Vernon. Schola, located at 1005 N. Charles St., will start its class schedule on June 9, with a Pasta I course, Pellegrino said.

The class schedule at Schola, which he will own and operate with the chef Amy von Lange, will include basic kitchen techniques such as knife skills and pasta-making as well as theme-based classes devoted to regional cooking styles, holiday entertaining, wine appreciation and farmers' markets.

Most technique classes will be $49. Themed classes, which include the preparation, and consumption of the dinner prepared during the class, are $69. A BYOB policy will be in effect for the themed classes.

"I've been wanting to do this for a long time," said Pellegrino, the co-host of "Radio Kitchen" on public-radio station WYPR. "And I couldn't ask for a better person to do it with."

Von Lange, formerly the executive chef at the Admiral Fell Inn, worked for Pellegrino at Corks, his well-remembered Federal Hill steak house. After closing Corks in 2011, Pellegrino worked in various capacities for Waterfront Kitchen.
