Golden West will wake up Hampden with waffles, put it to bed with tacos

Hampden has been getting pretty Belgium-y in the past few years, what with The Corner BYOB (now The Corner Charcuterie Bar), Le Garage and De Kleine Duivel.

Now it's about to get even Belgium-ier. Golden West Cafe (1105 West 36th St., 410-889-8891, goldenwestcafe.com) is in the process of installing a sidewalk-sales window operating out of what had been its seated waiting area. Starting at about 6 a.m., the window will sell coffee, espresso and Liege waffles, a yeasty and sugary waffle that is one of the most popular varieties in Belgium. Once they’re cooked they can be sliced and stuffed, with sweet things like Nutella, or savory items like ham and Gruyere cheese, said Golden West co-owner Thomas Rudis.

Later in the day, the window will switch over to selling specialty tacos, Rudis said. The window will typically remain open until about 3 a.m.

Rudis said that diners will still have plenty of room to wait for their tables. He plans to add a few bowling-alley benches in the center aisle that divides the dining room, and patrons are always invited to wait in the back bar, where children are allowed until 8 p.m.
