Eichenkranz, a German restaurant that traces its origins to 1894, closed its doors on Thursday.
The closing was confirmed by Arnold Silbiger, a lawyer representing the business, who said that the restaurant's owner, Harold Bowles, was retiring.
Bowles purchased the South Fagley Street restaurant in 1989. Under his care, it operated, often very quietly, as one of the city's only traditional German restaurants.
Eichenkranz was known for its comforting German specialties like sauerbraten with potato dumplings, sausages and apple strudel, and for its quiet atmosphere, which was a favorite with older diners. It was also known for staying open 365 days a year, including Christmas Day.
Eichenkranz had operated out of its South Fagley Street address since 1939, according to a 2006 Baltimore Sun review by Karen Nitkin. For a time, beginning in the 1970s, the restaurant operated under the name Kozy Inn. It changed back to Eichenkranz in 1985.
