The Charmery in Hampden is churning out a new ice cream flavor to honor Michael Phelps' 23 Olympic gold medals.
The Hampden ice cream shop at 801 W. 36th St. will serve scoops of Phelps Phlapjack Gold, a limited-edition, chocolate chip pancake-flavored ice cream, later this week.
David Alima, who owns the Charmery with his wife, Laura, said he plans to make about 30 gallons of the ice cream flavor using pancakes from Pete's Grille, a breakfast Phelps has been known to scarf down.
"We essentially kind of make pancake dust from it," adding maple syrup, butter, chocolate chips and golden marshmallow swirl to the mix, Alima said.
It's not the first time the shop has created a flavor to honor one of Baltimore's beloved athletes.
Earlier this year the shop made a batch of Manny Matcha-Dough, a matcha green tea ice cream with pieces of house-made cookie dough, in honor of Orioles' third baseman Manny Machado. The shop has also made flavors inspired by players like Orioles slugger Chris Davis and Ravens kicker Justin Tucker. Alima said he hopes to make a Joe Flacco flavor in the future.
The Charmery celebrated its third anniversary July 23.
Phelps Phlapjack Gold will be available at the shop Thursday until it sells out.
"Michael Phelps has great taste in pancakes," Alima said.
