Baltimore Greek Week highlights the Mediterranean diet

For the fifth annual Baltimore Greek Week, which runs April 13-19, about a dozen Greek-owned Baltimore-area restaurants will be offering discounts and specials.

The theme for this year's food-focused celebration of Greek culture, which culminates with the Maryland Greek Independence Day parade on April 19, is "The Mediterranean Diet: A Greek Journey through food."

The restaurants include a handful  in Baltimore's Greektown neighborhood -- Acropolis Restaurant, Ikaros RestaurantSamos Restaurant and Zorba's Bar and Grill.

Other participating restaurants are Dmitri's International Grille in Catonsville, Kali's Court Mezze in Fells Point, Timbuktu Restaurant in Hanover, By the Docks Restaurant in Middle River, The Hazelwood Inn in Rosedale and 7 West Bistro Grille in Towson.

The Hazelwood Inn is showing free Greek films during the week.

On April 16, Ikaros will host a discussion of "The Ikarian Diet." The evening event will include live Greek music, tastings of wine and olive oil and samplings of food associated with the healthy Mediterranean diet. The cost for the event, which begins at 6:30 p.m., is $25. For reservations, call Ikaros.
