Baltimore Chef Shop, a teaching kitchen, coming to Hampden

Hampden resident Scott Ryan will open a teaching kitchen on 36th Street. The chef currently teaches classes, like the one shown here, in his Hampden home.

A chef and longtime culinary instructor will open a "teaching kitchen" in Hampden this summer. The location, 807 W. 36th St., is a few doors down from the popular ice cream shop The Charmery.

The chef, Scott Ryan, 50, has taught culinary techniques and skills at degree-granting institutions and for his private business, Chef Scott Ryan, which conducts private lessons both in clients' homes and at his own home on Roland Avenue.

Baltimore Chef Shop will offer both single classes on culinary topics like Chinese cuisine, handmade pasta and sushi making as well as multi-part classes on basic kitchen techniques like knife skills. Class fees range from $45 to $85, depending on the materials used, Ryan said.

"Our focus will be bringing classic cooking techniques to ordinary people," said Ryan, who has taught at Stratford University in Baltimore, The Art Institute of Washington in Arlington and his alma mater, the Cambridge (Mass.) School of Culinary of Arts.

"We want to encourage people to eat at home and make their own food," said Ryan.
