Distracted driving is being blamed for a crash involving a Davie police car.

It happened about 10 p.m. Friday night when several Davie police officers were investigating a suspicious vehicle that was stopped in the 16600 block of Griffin Road.

There were several Davie police cars at the scene with their red and blue emergency lights flashing when one of the patrol cars was slammed into from behind, Sgt. Mark Leone said in a statement.

“Luckily the officer was not in the vehicle and the other driver was not injured,” he said. “By her own admission, the driver said that she was distracted while using an app on her mobile phone.”

The woman driver was given a ticket. The driver of the suspicious vehicle was released because he committed no infractions. He had just stopped his car in the dark near a landscaping nursery off Weston Road and police were investigating after receiving a call from a concerned resident.
