Remembering 1966: Sept. 4-10

Jim Hartzell Oriole bird, July 2, 1966 (Jim Hartzell / Baltimore Sun)

After two tough weeks that bit into their American League lead, the Orioles roar back with five straight victories to extend their winning streak to six, including a four-game sweep of New York that drops the Yankees into the cellar.

First, the Orioles defeat Chicago, 8-5, as shortstop Luis Aparicio — riding a 17-game hitting streak — rips the White Sox for five hits, his third such outburst this season. Then, on Labor Day, they take two from the Yankees, 5-4 and 7-4, as outfielder Paul Blair knocks in five runs before an announced 36,832 fans at Memorial Stadium.

The next night, Robinson homers (No. 22) in a 3-2 win that plunges New York into 10th place. Successive losses to the Minnesota Twins follow, but at week's end, the Orioles (89-53) lead by 101/2 games. Their magic number is 10 with 20 games to play.
