QUESTION: What popular former Oriole player shares a name with a famous 19th-century explorer?

ANSWER: Boog Powell, slugging first baseman turned barbecue king, is formally known as John Wesley Powell. He shares his name with the man who led the first official government-sponsored trip through the Grand Canyon, John Wesley Powell (1834-1902). That John Wesley Powell lost part of an arm in the Civil War Battle of Shiloh and led the 1869 Powell Geographic Expedition through the Green and Colorado Rivers.
