1639: Harvard University was named for clergyman John Harvard.

1733: Chemist Joseph Priestley, who would discover oxygen, was born near Leeds, Yorkshire, England.

1993: The Blizzard of 1993 hit Maryland, bringing one to two feet of snow throughout the state and hurricane-intensity winds.

2005: Black Sabbath and Blondie entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
