In 1958, the Major League Baseball All-Star Game was played at Baltimore’s Memorial Stadium. Orioles pitcher Billy O'Dell (above center) secured the American League’s 4-3 victory by pitching three perfect innings and retiring nine straight National League batters, including future Hall of Fame members Stan Musial, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Ernie Banks and Bill Mazeroski. 1776: Col. John Nixon gave the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence, in Philadelphia.

1889: The Wall Street Journal published its first editions.

1907: Florenz Ziegfeld staged his first “Follies” show at the New York Theater.

2011: Thousands gathered at Cape Canveral, Fla., to watch as NASA launched space shuttle Atlantis on the final mission of the 30-year shuttle program.
