Aug. 29, 2004: Melvin Mora hits a pair of two-run singles as the Orioles (58-71) defeat the Rangers in Texas, 7-6. The victory ends a 12-game losing streak, third longest in team history.Aug. 28, 1998: The visiting Ravens defeat the New York Giants, 14-6, to complete their first undefeated (4-0) preseason in their three years in Baltimore. Errict Rhett and Priest Holmes, a third-string running back, score for the Ravens, who'll finish the regular season 6-10.Sept. 1, 1986: Dan Plocki's 29-yard field goal late in a nationally televised game gives Maryland a 10-7 victory at Pittsburgh.Aug. 28, 1974: At Timonium Race Track, jockey Tony Agnello wins five races — four for trainer King Leatherbury.Sept. 1, 1971: Left-hander Mike Cuellar pitches his 16th complete game as the first-place Orioles defeat the Red Sox, 8-2, in Boston. Cuellar (17-7) also gets two hits and scores two runs.Sept. 1, 1969: An 8-0 victory in Milwaukee over the Chicago White Sox gives Jim Palmer (14-2) his sixth shutout and sixth straight win since returning from six weeks on the disabled list with a back injury. Palmer shaves his American League-leading ERA to 1.89 as the first-place Orioles improve to 92-43.Aug. 29, 1958: &quot;Ashamed, disappointed … but not discouraged,&quot; coach Weeb Ewbank says of the Colts' 27-7 preseason loss to the Washington Redskins at Memorial Stadium. Receiver Raymond Berry drops two passes and quarterback Johnny Unitas is 9-for-23 with two interceptions, as Baltimore's soon-to-be NFL champions fall to 0-2-1.Aug. 28, 1954: Knotty Pine, a 4-inch crustacean with one claw, defeats 39 entrants to win the annual National Hard Crab Derby in Crisfield. Knotty Pine completes the 20-foot race in three minutes and wins by 3 feet before 1,500 cheering spectators. Birthday Aug. 29, 1939: Frank &quot;Noodles&quot; Zupo, an Orioles catcher who, in his first appearance in 1957, teamed with pitcher George Zuverink to give Baltimore the first &quot;Z&quot; battery in big league history. Zupo died in 2005.
