Memorial walk honors little girl who loved animals

Animal lovers and their pets are invited to the first Sarah Jayne Orton Memorial Walk, to be held Saturday, May 17, starting at 11 a.m. at Sandymount Park in Finksburg. The walk will help raise money for animal care at the Baltimore Humane Society.

Sarah passed away suddenly last October at 5 years old, but left a legacy of love for all animals despite her young age. For her fifth birthday, she asked family and friends to donate gifts to the Baltimore Humane Society instead of giving them to her. Her dog, Scooter, was adopted there before Sarah was born and she spent her short life trying to help other animals in the shelter.

The Orton family plans to hold a walk every May to celebrate their daughter’s life around her birthday -- May 15. Saturday’s event will start with registration from 10 to 10:45 a.m. and then the walk for humans and their pets; registration costs $25.

The walk will be one mile long and themed a Rainbow of Hope after Sarah’s favorite color, which she always said was rainbow.
