In honor of Opening Day, a local animal shelter has come up with a plan to help you find a companion who would be more than happy to play “catch” and run the bases at your side.
The Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS) posted the following message Thursday morning on its Facebook page:
“Happy Opening Day, Baltimore! Adoption fees are waived for dogs through Saturday to celebrate.”
Shelter spokeswoman Bailey Deacon said that this at least the third year that BARCS has waived adoption fees for the Orioles home Opening Day. Partly, that’s because the shelter recently ran out of space for new dogs — more than 120 canines were crowding the shelter — and partly, it’s to celebrate the partnership with the baseball team.
For the past several years, the shelter has sold a calendar in which the ball players pose with either their own pets or adoptable animals. The 2017 calendar raised nearly $70,000 for BARCS, Deacon said.
“Who isn’t an Orioles fan today?” she asked. “Since we started the promotion last night, we’re already starting to see some of our dogs go to their forever homes.”
The offer includes dogs in the shelter, dogs in foster care and dogs at offsite events. The basic adoption rate is normally $75, which includes spaying or neutering the dog, vaccinations and an identifying microchip.
