Strut your mutt this weekend

What's better than a party for a great cause? One whose invitation includes your dog!

Canines and their humans are invited to join the Best Friends Animal Society and local animal welfare groups to help save lives at Strut Your Mutt this Saturday, Sept. 21, at Blob's Park in Jessup. The family-friendly festival will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and includes a 1-mile walk, cutest-dog contests, doggie doppelganger competitions, raffles, music, games, and entertainment.

Strut Your Mutt events will be hosted in 11 cities this fall to raise money to benefit homeless animals around the country. Participating Baltimore/Washington groups include Lucky Dog Animal Rescue; Dogs XL Rescue; Mutts Matter Rescue; Oldies but Goodies Cocker Rescue; Charm City Animal Rescue; Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League; and others.

The fundraising goal for this weekend's event is $50,000; Strutt Your Mutt hopes to raise $2 million nationwide, benefitting 240 shelters and rescue groups. Donations fund adoption programs, spay/neuter services, and programs that affect the number of animals entering and leaving shelters. Lacing up your walking shoes and grabbing a leash rarely does such good for homeless pets.
