Severely injured 'bait dog' found in Arundel

Rocky Road
(Anne Arundel County Police Department)

Anne Arundel county authorities have launched an animal cruelty investigation after a severly injured dog -- possibly the victim of dogfighting -- was found in Linthicum.

County Animal Control officers were called last Thursday to the 600 block of Andover Road after a citizen found a Pit bull with possible mortal injuries. Officers brought the dog to the county shelter where officials realized the dog, though in severe pain, still nosed around for affection from the staff. They named him Rocky Road and tried to determine whether the best course for him was euthenasia or immediate attention from a veterninarian.

Waugh Chapel Animal Hospital offered to treat Rocky Road for free and vets there determined his injuries were consistent with that of a "bait dog," a dog used to train fighting dogs.

As Rocky Road recovers from surgery, authorities have launched an investigation into how he sustained his injuries and who is responsible.

Rocky Road's recovery is expected to take weeks. But once he is able to leave the hospital, Tara's House, a non-profit rescue group, has agreed to take him and potentially put him up for adoption.
