The Maryland SPCA's 20th annual March for the Animals, which was originally scheduled for late April but postponed due to the unrest in Baltimore following the death of Freddie Gray, has been rescheduled for Sunday, May 31.
The 1.5-mile walk-a-thon and festival at Druid Hill Park raises money to provide shelter, care, food, medicine and spay/neuter procedures for the pets at the shelter.
"We are concerned that we won't reach our original goal of raising the $400,000 necessary to save and care for the more than 3,500 pets we anticipate will enter our adoption center this year," Tami Gosheff, MD SPCA special events and outreach manager, said in a statement. "We don't receive any operating funding from the government or the ASPCA, so support from our community is critical. We're counting on a good turnout."
There will be adoptable dogs on hand, from the SPCA and elsewhere, an agility course, photo booth with props, a pet-costume contest and more.
A donation of $40 or more gets you admission, a goodie bag, bandana for your four-legged friend and a t-shirt. Registration starts at 9 a.m. and the ceremonies begin at 10:00. People who are already registered do not need to re-register. For more information, visit marchfortheanimals.org.
