Spring marks the beginning of kitten season, according to the Baltimore Humane Society. And the Reisterstown "no-kill" shelter is preparing for the annual surge of newborns by asking for volunteer foster parents, who can help by bottle-feeding the kittens.
Newborn kittens need round-the-clock feeding, according to Wendy Goldband, a spokeswoman for the organization, and volunteers are needed to supplement the staff's efforts.
To celebrate the arrival of this year's class of adoptable kittens, the shelter is holding a "Kitten Shower" on Saturday, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The event will include demonstrations of bottle-feeding as well as "baby" shower games, refreshments and a gift registry.
"Part of the reason we're doing this is to educate people about t spaying and neutering pets so we don't have this inundation of kittens every spring," Goldband said.
The Baltimore Humane Society adoption shelter is at 1601 Nicodemus Road in Reisterstown. For information call 410-833-8848 or go to bmorehumane.org.
