Update: The Maryland SPCA says, "To assure the comfort and safety of everyone planning to attend today's March for the Animals, we have decided to postpone the March. We want to be sure that all attendees are able to participate without concern. We are disappointed, surely, but know we will all be able to get together soon to celebrate our 20th walk anniversary with you. The March is our most important fundraiser of the year and its success is critical for the Maryland SPCA to be able to continue to provide life-saving care to homeless pets in our community." A new date has not yet been selected.

Has it really been two decades?

The Maryland SPCA's 20th annual March for the Animals is happening this Sunday at Druid Hill Park.

The 1.5-mile walk-a-thon and festival raises money to provide shelter, care, food, medicine and spay/neuter procedures for the pets at the shelter.

"We do not receive any operating funds from the government or money from any other animal welfare organizations," Tami Gosheff, MD SPCA special events and outreach manager, said in a statement. "The March for the Animals is such an important fundraiser for us because it raises critical funds that are needed for the Maryland SPCA to save the lives of more than 3,500 pets each year. Our goal for this year's milestone march is to raise $400,000 to help pets in need. We're encouraging everyone who's ever attended one of our marches, pet adopters and pet lovers to help make this event the most successful yet."

There will be adoptable dogs on hand, from the SPCA and elsewhere, an agility course, a pet-costume contest and more.

A donation of $40 or more gets you admission, a goodie bag, bandana for your four-legged friend and a t-shirt. Registration starts at 9 a.m. and the ceremonies begin at 10:00. For more information, visit marchfortheanimals.org.
