For one lucky interior designer, the phrase "charity begins at home" may soon take on new significance, thanks to a contest sponsored by a local home furnishings showroom.
Design for a Difference will allow interior designers to compete for the chance to redecorate a space for their local charity. The winner will receive $20,000 in goods and services to benefit their group.
The nationwide contest is a partnership of Pikesville-based flooring company, Floors Etc., and Style Network TV host Mark Brunetz of "Clean House" fame.
"Designers are always looking to give back and there is a distinction between giving money and putting yourself on the line," said Brunetz, a spokesperson for the International Design Guild, an organization that represents flooring showrooms and is also one of the organizers of the contest. "And this contest allows people to be involved and put their hearts out there."
The winning designer will also get the chance to participate in a video with Brunetz that will showcase the makeover of the charity's space.
The makeover contest does not include major renovations involving demolition or updates to systems such as electrical, or plumbing. Some rooms are excluded, including bathrooms and kitchens. Contestants must be members of the International Design Guild.
"Design for a Difference gives us the opportunity to work with a nationally known designer and a local charity to provide them with a beautiful space while generating awareness for our designers," said Phil Adams of Floors, Etc. "It's a win-win for everyone involved."
