Like many couples, Kiriakos and Chrissy Nikoletos had their children in mind when they bought their home, a two-story brick Colonial in Perry Hall.

"We liked the fact that there was a community pool [for] the kids to use in the summer," Kiriakos Nikoletos said.

And having always lived in the area, they were particularly pleased that their children, Michael, 13, and Melina, 8, did not have to change schools.

They purchased the 5,500-square-foot home last year for $560,000. It was less than five years old, and the couple were the second owners.

Chrissy Nikoletos, who had her own design style planned for the open layout, remembers the white walls in every room and how she knew they would be the first to go. Besides painting every room, the Nikoletoses changed all the light fixtures, added hardwood flooring in the family room and office, installed a tile backsplash in their kitchen and bought stainless-steel appliances.

"I was going for… contemporary transitional with some glam touches," Chrissy Nikoletos said.

To fully realize her vision, she called on designer Adrianne Kotula.

"Adrianne was a tremendous help when it came to putting everything together," Nikoletos said. "[She] helped me decide on the paint colors."

The designer also suggested wallpaper for many of the rooms to make them stand out, in a color scheme of gray and yellow with turquoise touches for contrast.

The couple also decided on new furniture for the entire first floor, which consists of a kitchen, a family room and an office in the back of the house, and a formal living room and dining room separated by the entrance foyer.

Toby, the family's 2½ -year old bichon frise and Shih Tzu mix, follows master and mistress through the circular layout of the home and rests in the kitchen, where the couple stop for coffee. Maple cabinets with dark granite countertops and backsplash contrast against light yellow walls. Three lamps of cascading crystal drops hang over a 3-foot-wide island.

Behind the kitchen, at the rear of the home, the family breakfast room contains a dark-stained parson's-style table with six high-backed leather chairs. Fabric cornices hanging above a three-bay window are decorated in patterns of gold and brown. And a cylindrical-shaped chandelier hangs from the ceiling, with crystal beads draped at its base. The windows here frame an exterior that includes nearly a half-acre surrounded by a black aluminum fence.

"Ours is the largest lot in the community," said Kiriakos Nikoletos, 42, and the owner of Bellagio Pizzeria in Rosedale.

A perfect spot for family gatherings, the two-story family room is the couple's favorite in the house. Kotula and Chrissy Nikoletos designed the custom yellow, gray and black floral drapes that flank the fireplace. Above it, an arched window provides an abundance of natural light. Twin tufted gray sofas are placed at angles for watching a 75-inch flat-screen TV on an opposite wall.

A fun pop of glamour is found in the powder room, where a gilt-framed mirror and dark wood vanity provide a subtle foil to walls papered in a diamond design consistent with the yellow and gray motif throughout the house.

Chevron design wool carpets in shades of gray, cream and yellow provide an updated, contemporary feel to an otherwise traditional two-story foyer.

Chrissy Nikoletos, a 38-year-old nurse practitioner recruiter for UnitedHealthcare, has a favorite application of wallpaper that can be seen in the formal dining room, where she "wanted something different and bold." Kotula came through with a design that employs vertical tan medallions alternating with yellow cascading teardrops. The overall effect is stunning, especially as the wallpaper has only been hung above the chair rail, with walls below it painted light taupe.

On the home's second level, the master bedroom features a carved light oak furniture suite. The interior of the tray ceiling is painted turquoise. The master bath showcases a ceramic oval tub on a marble tile dais with columns on either side.

The Nikoletos family plans to live many years in their Perry Hall home. It is close to Bellagio Pizzeria, and offers an office on the first floor where Chrissy Nikoletos can work and also be connected to the family and activity on the first floor.

"We love the community," said Kiriakos Nikoletos. "It's close to downtown, but we also feel tucked away."
