The house at 1818 Ruxton Road was once owned by Philip Livingston Poe, a cousin of Edgar Allan Poe, who lived in it for almost 60 years. It became known as the Poe Mansion and is now on the market for $2,499,999.

The current owners hired a structural engineer and have lovingly restored the home, built in 1875, with a new electrical system and fixtures, as well as steel beams, while maintaining many original features. Long- leaf pine and oak floors run throughout the main floor, as well as on the second and third levels.

The front portico opens into the foyer with an original coal fireplace and recessed ceiling lights. A white wood staircase with dark wood hand railing is in the middle under three arches that lead to the second floor.

The new kitchen has white Carrera marble countertops and island, modern hanging lights and the original brick wood-burning fireplace. Jenn-Air appliances and a wall oven have been added. The same Carrera marble can be found in the master bath. Other amenities include a mudroom and a butler's pantry.

"I bought the house for our 10th wedding anniversary," said owner Bill Waesche, adding that his wife had grown up in the neighborhood. "It was my wife's dream house."

An open floor plan leads from the kitchen to the great room. High ceilings and original arched windows make the room big without feeling cavernous. A built-in bar with brass foot railing and a wood-burning fireplace add coziness.

The second and third floors have had the same attention to detail as the main living area. Each bedroom has its own bathroom, and the former sleeping porches are enclosed by glass. Two bedrooms were transformed into one 900-square-foot master bedroom and bath, complete with walk-in closet, and wet bar.

When removing some wallpaper, the owners found a note dated May 31, 1913 saying the wallpaper was being done for Poe and signed by the artisan. The date it was discovered: May 31, 2016.

Waesche said he hopes the next owners love the house as much as his family does. "It's our dream house — and still is."
