In 1936, the owners of Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore built a manor home on more than 54 acres in Howard County that once belonged to the descendants of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. That property at 3925 Folly Quarter Road in Ellicott City is now for sale for $7 million.

"I call this one of the prime, principal properties of Howard County, sitting on one of the highest elevations there," said listing agent Creig Northrop, of the Creig Northrop Team of Long & Foster Real Estate. "It's basically its own resort with a billion-dollar view."

An aerial view reveals the magnitude of the estate. There are rolling hills of pasture and trees enclosed in 45 fenced-in acres. The 8,000-square-foot stone manor house is at the end of a circular driveway off a private road. Colorful foliage frames the home. There is a one-bedroom guest house, a pool, fountains, a tennis court, several outbuildings and horse barns.

The mansion has six bedrooms, five full bathrooms and three half-baths. A winding staircase is the centerpiece of the home's grand entrance hall. Other rooms include a gallery hall, library, catering kitchen and a fitness room. The home is enhanced with details that include intricate molding, fluted columns, marble floors and vanities, a magnificent mural, five wood-burning fireplaces and a Tiffany chandelier. French doors open onto the patio and pool area.

Multiple balconies are features of the mansion's exterior — perfect spots from which to savor the countryside's beauty.

"It's as fine a property as you can find anywhere," Northrop said.
