What are some tips to prevent trees from tipping over?

Question:

I have to replace a tree that keeled over in the snow and wind. Any tips to keep that from happening to the next tree I plant?

Answer:

Encourage a good root system and don't encourage a top-heavy tree. Lay off the fertilizer which will ramp up top growth at the expense of root growth. Roots need air and water. When soil is compacted from foot traffic and mowing, air and water can’t penetrate it. A wide apron of mulch, 1-3 inches deep, around your tree helps keep soil looser. Spread out the roots when you plant. During dry spells, for at least the first 2 years, provide your new tree with about 1-inch of water a week.
