Mad sales for Preakness hatter

Kingsley Berlin, 38, of Odenton was in desperate need of a lighter, cooler hat for a day of horse racing at Pimlico Race track. Her wide-brim hat simply wouldn't do in Baltimore's afternoon heat.

"It's stifling hot," she said.

Berlin stumbled upon Christine A. Moore's hat display in the corporate tent area of Pimlico Race Course and found stylish relief -- a black feathery fascinator to go along with her ensemble. Moore  even added a white feather on the spot to better coordinate with Berlin's outfit.

"She has so many unique-looking hats," Berlin said. "With all the colors and designs you are pretty much guaranteed to find something."

Moore, whose hat designs have been featured in top fashion magazines, was in her element Saturday.

"It's been an amazing day," said Moore, who created Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake's hat this year. "Sales are way up by 30 percent."
