Walmart will soon be offering one-day free shipping — without a membership.

Walmart dropped the news after Amazon announced on April 26 it would offer one-day shipping for Prime members. A yearly membership costs $119.

A short time later, Walmart tweeted: "One-day free shipping...without a membership fee. Now THAT would be groundbreaking. Stay tuned." No other information was offered by the Bentonville, Ark., company. Currently, Walmart offers free two-day shipping like Amazon. No membership fee is required.

Amazon announced the move with hopes that cutting delivery times in half would make a membership more attractive, since many other online stores offer free deliveries in two days. It did not say when it would offer the new service. Prime members also get access to free unlimited video streaming, photo storage and discounts at Whole Foods Market, among other benefits.

Amazon also can't compete with Walmart and Target, where ordering online and picking up at a store is becoming more popular with shoppers.
