Secret World of Arrietty gives new life to kids' classic

The new Disney presentation, "The Secret World of Arrietty," an animated feature from Studio Ghibli, promises to give new life to a classic children's book series that dates back to the early 1950s.

The movie is adapted from Mary Norton's "The Borrowers," the first book in a series about a group of little people who live under the floorboards of a house and borrow things need for their survival. Among them is teeny Arrietty Clock. She and the others ingeniously repurpose household items -- matchboxes are used for storage, postage stamps as paintings -- and try to go unnoticed. Among the actors givng voice to the animated characters are Amy Poehler, Carol Burnett and Will Arnett.

Norton, a British author, also wrote a pair of stories about children and an amateur witch, later adapted into the movie "Bedknobs and Broomsticks." Norton (1903-1992) obviously was way ahead of her time. If she were alive today, she'd be turning out movie after movie for studios such as Pixar and Disney.
