In a world of wines meant to go with food, Vinho Verde stands out as one best for just sipping on its own. These Portuguese "green" wines — made from under-ripe white grapes — are typically fresh, lively and slightly fizzy, with bright fruit and a salty tang. This Aveleda is a wonderful example that took me back to the streets of Lisbon, where the locals swill Vinho Verde by the pitcher. It goes well with fish, but food is definitely optional.
