Canton resident Sarah Fries describes her style as "casual and eclectic. I like things that are very unique and stand out a bit." When we "glimpsed" the 23-year-old assistant coach of women's volleyball at University of Maryland, Baltimore County having a drink with friends at Nacho Mama's, she was wearing something that she "threw together at the last minute. It was warmer outside. So I wanted something that would keep me cool but I wouldn't look completely sloppy in." We think she "killed" it, to use the volleyball term.
The look: White V-neck cotton T-shirt. Rhinestone- and stud-embellished denim mini skirt. Brown, tan and white striped canvas Gitano wedges with bows. Wide hammered brass hoop earrings. Copper, brass and silver cuff bracelet. Beige crocodile-patterned patent leather clutch handbag.
Where it came from: She bought the T-shirt at the Gap. She's had the mini and the shoes for a while. Her earrings came from Claire's and the bracelet from Premier Designs. She found the handbag in a Bijoux Terner store in an airport, "one of those stores where everything is $10 or below."
Her style: "Typically, I'm pretty laid-back and natural. I don't like to wear a whole lot of makeup, but that also suits my lifestyle because I am a coach. ... During the week, I'm pretty sporty. In the summer, I'll wear shorts and a T-shirt — typically UMBC attire because I'm going to work. And that'll be paired with either flip-flops or tennis shoes. It's nothing exciting. ... On the weekends, that's my opportunity to dress up a little bit; to wear things I don't get to wear during the week. I love to wear high heels, even though I'm pretty tall [5 feet 10 inches]. And I'm really into skinny jeans right now and leggings."
Favorite shops: "I really like H&M. I'm also into the T.J. Maxx's and Marshalls, the places where you can find a whole assortment of clothes that are cheaper. The only time I shop online is through Victoria's Secret. I do like their clothes."
Clean lines with added visual interest: "I'll [generally] wear a lot of plain things as far as my clothes go. Then I'll accent it with a crazy bright-colored or patterned shoe or purse. My favorite bag right now is a bright turquoise. It's pretty plain, but just that color makes it pop. [One of my favorite pairs of shoes is] a black pair of heels that are pretty high with circles that are gold, silver and bronzy all over them."
All about balance: "I particularly love big earrings on me. However, if I wear bigger earrings, I won't wear a necklace. But I'll balance it out with a bangle or a chunky bracelet. ... I think there is such a thing as too much skin. If you're going to go with a short skirt or shorts, you want to cover up a bit up top. ... Throughout the week, I'm extremely busy with work and I try to balance that with my free time and keeping up with my friendships. That shows in my wardrobe because I'm balancing my moods as well; how I get from one day to the next is reflected in my outfits."
