City workers have repaired a damaged water pipe that caused the road near the 4300 block of York Road to sink Tuesday morning and brought traffic in Northeast Baltimore to a near crawl.
All lanes on York Road reopened as of about 1:30 p.m. today but officials still warned of heavy traffic throughout the area.
The road closure, combined with leftover snow in lanes on several major thoroughfares, left pockets of Northeast Baltimore stymied by traffic.
Steve Bailey lives on Taplow Road in the Homeland neighborhood. He said his usual commute through Baltimore, a route that involves taking Charles Street to St. Paul Street, Franklin Street and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, takes about 20 minutes. This morning, Bailey said it took him an hour and 8 minutes to go three miles.
Bailey said there was a bottleneck of cars at the intersection of Charles and Northern Parkway. He added that several sections along Charles and St. Paul streets were squeezed down to one lane.
"I've been commuting to D.C. since 1979," Bailey said. "This could very well be the longest trip ever."
