Wedded: Marla Katz and Carl Cutler

Her story: Marla Katz, 25, was born in Columbia. She works as a restaurant server and substitute teacher. Her parents, Roslyn and Russell Katz, live in Columbia.

His story: Carl Cutler, 25, was born in Laurel. He works as a business operations associate at TEKsystems. His mother, Carron Cutler, lives in Columbia.

Their story: The two met on Myspace eight years ago.

"We had a lot of mutual friends and finally decided to meet," Marla said, adding that there wasn't exactly an instant love connection.

"I didn't really think it would ever be anything," she recalled of their first face-to-face meeting, which was while he was at work at Finish Line. "He didn't really seem like my type. And he felt the same way. We both thought it would only be a friendship."

The two continued to hang out and wound up seeing the movie "Music And Lyrics" on Valentine's Day.

"He asked me out. He told me he loved my personality and spending time with me," she said. "I know, cheesy, but it was very sweet."

The two live in Columbia.

The proposal: Carl proposed to Marla on Dec. 15, 2013.

Marla's sister told her she had won tickets for a dinner cruise in Washington. Carl persuaded Marla to pose for a picture with him outside the boat.

"We walked over to the water, and my sister and her husband both had the cameras ready, and I stood posing for the picture with Carl," she said. "All of a sudden, he is on one knee. I looked down and was completely shocked. It was one of the best nights of my life."

Venue: About 120 people attended the wedding and reception at Pier 5 Hotel.

Flowers and decor: The couple chose purple and yellow as their colors.

"Carl and I both love the color purple, so we figured it would fit with the theme of the wedding," Marla said.

Flowers by Judy provided the flowers, which included calla lilies.

"I loved the color of them, and they had white, purple and yellow in them," Marla said.

Her dress: Marla's mermaid dress was from Bridal Images in Rockville.

Bridesmaids' attire: Bridesmaids wore purple dresses from Nordstrom.

Men's attire: Carl wore a black-on-black tuxedo with a purple bow tie from Men's Wearhouse. The groomsmen wore black tuxedos with purple vests to match the bridesmaids' dresses.

Music: DJ Dan Hawkins from MusicMasters provided the music. The couple's first dance was to "Endless Love" by Diana Ross and Lionel Richie.

Food and dessert: Pier 5 Hotel catered the wedding. Appetizers included lamb chops and pigs in a blanket. Dinner was filet mignon topped with red peppers, asparagus and redskin potatoes, and portobello mushrooms wrapped in phyllo dough. The couple also served a cake from Uptown Bakers.

Favors: The couple had a self-serve candy bar for favors.

Special touches: The couple went to Jamaica for their honeymoon.
