His story: Hermes Camelo, 40, was born and raised in Recife, Brazil. Hermes moved to the United States in 2003 to take a job as a computational translation specialist with an international health organization, which he still works for. His mother, Sonia Almeida, is a fashion designer and artist living in Recife.
His story: Kenneth Petty, 36, was born and raised in Baltimore. After college he spent 16 years in the restaurant and hotel industry in Baltimore as a partner in Kali's Restaurant Group. During his stint with the group, he opened Meli, Tapas Adela and The Admiral's Cup. Kenneth is now the food and beverage director for the Hilton Garden Inn near the U.S. Capitol. His father, Raymond Petty, lives in Baltimore.
Their story: The two met on the dating website Plenty of Fish. Hermes was living in Alexandria, Va., and Kenneth in Baltimore.
"We both worked so much that we felt online was the perfect way to meet people since we did not have time to go out," Kenneth said. "I answered his ad first. And at first I thought he was brushing me off."
The women in the wedding party carried large white calla lilies; the men had mini ones for their lapels.
Men's attire: Both men wore classic fitted Calvin Klein tuxedos from Men's Wearhouse. Groomsmen wore classic black suits with royal blue ties and pocket squares.
Music: Music Masters provided the DJ service. Since members of Hermes' family came to the wedding from Brazil, the couple combined Brazilian dance songs and music with a samba beat into the playlist. The couple opened the dance floor with the song "We are One" by Pitbull, which was the theme song from the 2014 World Cup.
"We selected every single song and made sure the dance floor was never empty the entire night," Kenneth said.
Food and dessert: Pier 5 catered the event. During the cocktail hour, guests were served Brazilian coxinha — shredded chicken mixture fried in dough — to represent Hermes' family and pizza to represent Kenneth's family. Other nibbles included lobster salad crustinis, mushroom and caramelized onion tarts, and prosciutto-wrapped asparagus. The dinner buffet included crab cakes, beef tenderloin, crab claws and jumbo shrimp
The three-tiered wedding cake featuring royal blue scroll work was from Baltimore Cakery. They also served two groom's cakes from La Cakerie. Because Hermes is a superhero fan, Kenneth surprised him with superhero-themed cakes. The first was adorned with Superman flying over Brazil; the second featured the Green Lantern flying over the Baltimore skyline.
Favors: The two served Italian candied almonds to honor Kenneth's late mother. The couple also had a photo booth so that guests could take home pictures as favors. Homemade desserts representing both men's families were given.
