Folks who came to the New Beginnings Gala at the Hyatt Regency Baltimore weren't just supporting Baltimore Outreach Services, which provides housing, job training and other services to homeless women and children. They were also getting a taste of one of its programs.
"I have four students in the kitchen tonight," said Connie Crabtree, event chair and director of the services' culinary arts program, referring to graduates of that program who now work in the Hyatt kitchen.
While enjoying those graduates' culinary creations was part of the evening's appeal, there was another form of satisfaction — one that goes beyond the gastronomic — that was a big reason why people came to the $150-a-ticket gala, according to organizers.
"It's [about] the people that we're helping," said Karen Adkins, BOS executive director.
"You help the women and children get out of the shelter and back to a happy life," said Anne West, board president.
