Jamaican-born tailor Clifton Hutchinson, best known as “Nicky,” has offered alterations and custom-made suits, shirts and casual dresses in the Baltimore area for 16 years, creating a loyal following through internet reviews and word of mouth.
“It all lies in the cutting,” said Hutchinson, 52, who, freehand and without patterns, cuts to fit, and takes the custom-suit experience very seriously.
“If I make a suit for a client, and the suit doesn't fit, it's not the client’s fault. It think it's my fault, because at the end of the day, I'm the expert,” Hutchinson said.
“My job is to make sure when you put it on and when someone sees you, they should ask you ‘Who made that for you?’ and see the difference in it, versus a suit that you basically bought in a store. ... It's supposed to look like it's yours,” he said.
What keeps him going? “I take great pride in what I do. And it's nothing to me like making a suit for a client and he just lights up like a Christmas tree," he said.
