Mayor Brandon Scott welcomed a new member of the family last week: a Yorkshire terrier puppy named Lord Grogu of Baltimore.
“He is a Yorkie-something mix,” Scott said Wednesday. “The ‘something’ is yet to be determined. So we’ll see.”
Scott said he had adopted the dog from a rescue organization and picked him up Saturday from Frederick before the Preakness Stakes.
Scott described his newest arrival as “full of energy” and a “typical Yorkie, very smart, vert inquisitive” who has taken to housebreaking easily.
“He’ll be coming to City Hall shortly,” Scott said.
The name Lord Grogu comes in part from the Disney+ show “The Mandalorian,” said Scott, adding, “If you’ve ever watched ‘The Mandalorian,’ the character that everyone calls ‘Baby Yoda’ is actually Grogu.”
The “Lord” is an homage to Scott’s previous dog, Sir Charles of Baltimore.
“We had to keep the regal distinguishedness going. So he’s Lord Grogu of Baltimore,” said Scott, who also has a regally named cat, Madam Scarlet.
Madam Scarlet has reportedly met Lord Grogu’s arrival with some feline skepticism.
“He knows that she’s the boss,” Scott said. “He found that out very quickly.”
Scott first announced Grogu’s arrival on Instagram this week. In a photo, he holds the dog while wearing a T-shirt with the face of Sir Charles of Baltimore, also a Yorkie. Sir Charles died in December of congestive heart failure just months shy of his 15th birthday.

Scott said he and his family maintain the Instagram accounts for his menagerie of pets. The lighthearted account for Sir Charles of Baltimore has just over 1,000 followers and includes posts dating back to 2019, the year Scott became City Council president.
