This Thanksgiving Day, Marylanders are in for a treat.
Not only will Spike Lee's Netflix series "She's Gotta Have It" debut, but residents will get to see and hear some homegrown talent in Lee's remake of his 1986 film.
Baltimore native and actress DeWanda Wise, who has also appeared in WGN America's "Underground" and Fox's "Shots Fired," will star as Nola Darling, the sexually liberated Brooklyn, N.Y., woman who tries to balance dating three persistent suitors, including fan favorite Mars Blackmon, originally played by Lee himself.
Local musicians will also get some recognition in the series.
The song "Song About Singing" by The New Retro, a band assembled at the University of Maryland, College Park, was chosen to be featured in the show. Its members, according to bassist Enoch Rowe, are from all over Maryland.
The song, mixed in Parkville by Brandon Lackey, the founder of Bmore BeatClub and the studio manager of downtown recording studio Lineup Room, was chosen after Lee put out a special call for artists on Instagram, asking them to submit their original music for consideration for the show. You can hear more of The New Retro's music here.
The show will premiere on Netflix Nov. 23.
