Actress Susan Sarandon endorses DeRay Mckesson for Baltimore mayor

It's not every day that a celebrity endorses a candidate in the Baltimore mayor's race.

Actress Susan Sarandon backed DeRay Mckesson on Tuesday via Twitter. "I support @deray for Mayor. Give the people of Baltimore a chance for change," she tweeted.

Even though Sarandon, who has starred in films such as "Thelma & Louise" and "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," has no apparent ties to Baltimore, she is known as a social and political activist.

In January, the actress campaigned for presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders in Iowa. Sarandon's Twitter feed is filled with posts about Sanders' campaign and the general election.

And she's not the only celebrity who's behind Mckesson's campaign. Comedian and actor Michael Ian Black has also shown support for the candidate on Twitter.

Mckesson threw his hat into a crowded mayoral race of 12 other Democrats just minutes before the deadline on Feb. 3. Despite Mckesson's popularity on social media — with 320,000 Twitter followers — a recent Baltimore Sun and University of Baltimore poll shows him favored by less than 1 percent of likely Democratic primary voters.

Maybe Sarandon's support will give Mckesson a much-needed boost. Maybe there are more celebrity endorsements to come for Mckesson. Comedian and actor Michael Ian Black has also shown support for Mckesson on Twitter.

Maybe Beyonce will be next.

Considering Mckesson is one of the 10 people Queen B follows on Twitter, it's not so far-fetched.
