WASHINGTON – Mixing politics and fitness has rarely seemed so risky.
Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, who is considering a run for president in 2016, said on Monday that he broke his right elbow while working out over the weekend. An aide said the incident occurred while the characteristically fit Democrat was lifting weights.
“Broke my elbow over the weekend at the gym,” O’Malley, now in a brace, wrote in a tweet that went on to thank the staff at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore. O’Malley wrote that the “surgery went well & I'm on the road to a quick recovery.”
The incident, which an aide said would not affect O’Malley’s upcoming travel, comes just weeks after Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid suffered what appears to have been a more serious injury while working out with resistance bands. That accident required surgery to restore vision in one eye.
O’Malley, who turned 52 last month, is set to visit the early presidential primary states of Iowa and New Hampshire in coming weeks.
