"Undisclosed: The State v. Adnan Syed," a podcast promising to plumb even greater depths of the murder case behind the incredibly popular "Serial" podcast, will launch April 13.
Put together by lawyers Rabia Chaudry, Susan Simpson and Colin Miller, the podcast will reveal "new evidence and information" concerning the 1999 murder of Woodlawn High School student Hae Min Lee and subsequent trial and incarceration of her ex-boyfriend, Adan Syed, according to a news release.
The case was the subject of "Serial," a 12-part podcast by "This American Life" producer and one-time Baltimore Sun reporter Sarah Koenig. The podcast was downloaded more than 76 million times.
Syed, who is serving a life sentence for murder, maintains his innocence and has requested a new trial, saying his former counsel, M. Cristina Gutierrez, failed to represent him adequately. Gutierrez, who died 12 years ago amid health and legal problems, failed to investigate an alibi witness and never looked into a plea deal, Syed charges.
In February, the state Court of Special Appeals granted his request to reopen his appeal after two unsuccessful attempts in the last dozen years.
