NHL team celebrates its best player with Kevin Spacey sweatshirt, and other Spacey tidbits

Here at the Insider, we, like many binge-watchers, are counting the days until "House of Cards" returns to Netflix. (Update: Only 64 to go!)

In the meantime, we'll stay busy by keeping in-real-life tabs on the man behind Frank Underwood, Kevin Spacey. Like his character, he seems to pop up in unexpected ways.

For instance: In the locker room of the NHL's Florida Panthers. As the Miami Herald's George Richards reported on Twitter, the first-place team now awards the game's individual "hero," or most valuable player, with an unordinary blue hooded sweatshirt.

The indelible image centered on the shirt? An absurd cutout of Spacey's smirking face floating in space.

The reason for the wearable award seems like a team secret, Richards writes.

"No one will say, although everyone I ask laughs when it's brought up," the Panthers beat reporter wrote on his hockey blog.

Aware of the sweatshirt, Spacey apparently knows its significance.

"Only I really know what #SpaceyInSpace means. Hope it continues to bring good luck!" Spacey wrote on Twitter on Wednesday afternoon.

On Tuesday, a photo of Panthers center Aleksander Barkov wearing the sweatshirt post-game circulated through social media. As Yahoo points out, the online store Redbubble has the pullover sweatshirt on sale for $47.65 here.

For fans looking to emulate Spacey's acting chops, the two-time Academy Award winner is offering online acting classes this spring via the teaching website, Masterclass.

Access to Spacey's class ($90) is available for pre-order now. It includes 29 video lessons over five hours, a 40-page workbook and the opportunity to upload videos to receive feedback from other class members, according to the website. Spacey will critique select students' work.

"If you've done well in the business, it's your obligation to send the elevator back down," Spacey says in an introduction video as to why he's working with students. (The video can be watched at the top of this post.)

And if simply being a Spacey fan is more your thing, remember to tune into TNT or TBS on Jan. 30 for the Screen Actors Guild Awards. (Both channels are airing the ceremony.)

Spacey is nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series, and "House of Cards" is up for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. However, the Golden Globes, airing Jan. 10, declined to recognize Spacey and the show as a whole this year. Robin Wright — the actress who plays Claire, the wife of Underwood — was the only "House of Cards" actor nominated.
