Kathy Bates listened to Barbara Mikulski clips to learn Baltimore accent for 'American Horror Story'

Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski, 78, Democratic chairwoman of the Senate Appropriations Committee (Lloyd Fox, Baltimore Sun)

Yes, it's true, Senator Babs' diction -- a lovely specimen of East Baltimorean -- was the inspiration for Ethel Darling's voice, Bates told Buzzfeed.

Bates said she also studied this "Lexicon of Bawlamarese" website to create the accent for Darling, the bearded lady of the show's creepy freak show.

She also practiced singing "The Star Spangled Banner" in a Baltimore accent, which, we imagine, is just how Francis Scott Key himself sang the tune.
