"Hairspray Live" is about to get a little more Baltimore flavor.

NBC will host auditions for its live production of "Hairspray" — based on the 1988 John Waters movie — at the Hippodrome on Sept. 15, giving fans a chance to participate in a dance routine in the live musical.

Judging the performances will be actress Maddie Baillio, who will play Tracy Turnblad in the NBC show; Brooke Engen, who hires the show's dancers and works closely with choreographer Jerry Mitchell; and an NBC executive.

Those auditioning can line up at the Hippodrome starting at 8 a.m. At around 10:30 a.m., groups of 300 will be brought in the building to practice the dance and perform for the judges.

The judges will select three finalists. The winner will be announced on WBAL the morning of Sept. 20, according to an NBC spokeswoman.

WBAL has posted an instructional video featuring "Hairspray Live" cast member Derek Hough, who will play Corny Collins, breaking down the choreography step-by-step to prepare "Hairspray" hopefuls.

John Waters talks about his inspiration for the story and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra performance of "Hairspray."

"Hairspray Live," which is set in Baltimore,  will air Dec. 7. The star-studded cast includes Jennifer Hudson, Harvey Fierstein, Kristin Chenoweth, Martin Short, Sean Hayes, Rosie O'Donnell, Ariana Grande and Andrea Martin.
