Rancic apologizes (again) for comments about Zendaya Coleman's dreadlocks [Updated]

E!'s Giuliana Rancic, a University of Maryland alum, found herself in hot water after Monday night's Fashion Police Oscars special, in which she made comments about actress Zendaya Coleman's hair.

Rancic said that the 18-year-old actress' dreadlocked hair looked like she smelled of "weed" and "patchouli oil."

Social media exploded with a barrage of comments accusing Rancic of everything from racism to hypocrisy.

Coleman tweeted out a response to Rancic's comment that said, in part: "There is already harsh criticism of African American hair in society without the help of ignorant people who choose to judge others based on the curl of their hair."

A slew of media outlets wrote about the incident, including People, Perez Hilton, Gawker, US Weekly —almost all siding with Coleman. Perez Hilton wrote: "Wow! Well said!" to Coleman's response. And People wrote that Coleman shamed Rancic with her response.

Rancic later tweeted out an apology: "I'm sorry I offended you and others. I was referring to a bohemian chic look. Had NOTHING to do with race and NEVER would!!!"

Check out the interview I did with Rancic last year, in which she talked about covering the red carpet.

UPDATE: Rancic issued a second apology--this time on-air Tuesday evening, according to the Los Angeles Times.

"I just want everyone to know, I didn't intend to hurt anyone," Rancic said, "but I've learned it is not my intent that matters, it's the result. And the result is that people are offended, including Zendaya, and that is not OK."

The Los Angeles Times reports that she added: "This really has been a learning experience for me. I've learned a lot today and this incident has taught me to be a lot more aware of cliches and stereotypes, how much damage they can do. And that I am responsible as we all are to not perpetuate them further."

Rancic's second apology followed comments by "Fashion Police" colleague Kelly Osbourne, who said that "everyone involved" had 24 hours to "make it right" or she would share her thoughts on the situation, according to the Los Angeles Times. She added that she was questioning staying on the show.
